Thank Your Thunders
I grew up with the Desiderata beckoning prominent from a kitchen wall, right at eye level so as not to be missed. I am forever grateful that the hanger of that didactic poem, my mother, was wise and reflective and wanted us to be so as well. Beyond having the patience of Job, at least most of the time for we were often six hellions, she possessed a fierce sense of duty to attempt to raise conscious beings. Some days I think she succeeded.
Although the beautifully framed poem was usually ignored, as things seen daily often are, the occasional cursory read never failed to inspire. Oh, if I could only live by those words I thought as a child, already frustrated with myself. As I echo those words today I am aware that they offer, like my yoga practice, less judgement and more of a path to aspire to and, when I need it, a hefty dose of solace. The last line of this timeless poem is currently especially poignant. “With all its sham, drudgery, and broken dreams, it’s still a beautiful world. Be cheerful. Strive to be happy.” Give it a read.
I’ve heard that we each have four Thunders, or four people who influence us profoundly. Number one Thunder was my mother who affected me through both connection and conflict, but most importantly modeled being truly, unselfishly, present. What a gift!
Thunder number two is my friend and yoga master Maryann Parker who taught me the invaluable true essence of yoga. Maryann will continue to share her insights and yoga philosophy with us in the Yoga Wisdom part of this newsletter.
Who are your four Thunders?
Thanksgiving is the perfect time to reflect on them and to express your gratitude.
Happy Thanksgiving!
